On Sept. 27, 1994, a Muni bus accidently hit and killed bike messenger Thomas Meredith, 26. A colleague compared that job to "a game of pinball, and you're the ball." At the time it was said of Critical Mass that, "there are no organizers. There are just people who print up leaflets. Most people feel good that it's not a real organized event." That month, more than 1,000 cyclists showed up, a higher attendance than usual, it was reported.
