A woman reported that some time before she’d opened five cell phone accounts. She received rebates for doing this. When her contract expired after one year, she cancelled her accounts and opened 5 new accounts.
As the store employee requested, she brought back two of the new cell phones that she’d received. They told her to bring in the other phones to receive her other rebates. When the three other phones arrived, she brought them to the store, but it had closed down.
The woman told police that she called AT&T and someone there told her that she had 10 open cell phone accounts and that she would have to pay a $315 cancellation fee for each account.
She said she was also told that her five previous accounts were all still active and AT&T doesn’t offer one-year contracts on cell phones.
